Hello, happy Friday, and a happy Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to all who celebrate! I’m actually pleasantly surprised that the commemorative tea and mug I ordered from the UK made it in yesterday, just in time. (The mug was made in Stoke-on-Trent, home of the famous The Great Pottery Throw Down show I won’t shut up about!)
In case you’re unaware, this weekend is Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee -- she’s celebrating 70 years on the throne. This is actually the first time they’ve ever celebrated a Platinum Jubilee, and it’s likely to be the last (not just because Queen Elizabeth is very, very, old, but uh -- I’m not really convinced the monarchy is going to be around much longer).
Personally, I just love the kitsch of it all. One of my coworkers in England sent me a photograph of his neighbor’s front yard and it’s full of bunting, Christmas lights, and a life size standee of the Queen. I cannot cope.
You know who else can’t cope, I imagine? Charles. This man is going to end up being King for about 1 week when he’s 97 years old. This screenshot I took from a Time article says it all:
Hmm. Yeah, unlikely this man is going to live to be 143. But ya never know! 🤷♀️
Sunday, I went to the Coldplay show at Soldier Field. That was my first time ever attending a massive stadium show, and it did not disappoint. Just an overwhelming, in-your-face blast of color (the crowd had LED bracelets that did all sorts of cool visual stuff), sound, lights, confetti, flames, fireworks -- it was amazing. 10/10, would attend again.
I’ve also spent this week heavily invested in the new season of Stranger Things -- I’m only 5 episodes in, so no spoilers, please! It’s great. Episode 4 was really, really well done, and I’m 100% on board with this:
And as we move on to this week’s internet finds, I’ll leave you with this great promo pic:
Headline of the Week
This piece from The Cut is fantastic. Pride month seems to be a minefield for social media managers, and this is no exception. Watching brands fall all over themselves to court LGBT folks and also make posts they subsequently walk back is just…*chef’s kiss*.
I Still Think About This
To be fair, I think a lot of us do. But this week marked the 20th anniversary of the premiere of The Wire, which is still one of the best shows ever to grace television.
This Rolling Stone piece is pretty great and touches on what made the show so incredible. If you haven’t watched it before, I highly recommend it. Fantastic storylines, characters, and acting. I also recommend taking your time with it, lest your anxiety get cranked up thinking someone’s about to do a drive-by on you when you’re taking your dog out. (Read: Do not try to watch the entire 3rd season in 2 days because your brother is visiting.)
Randomly Selected Animal Cutie
I need to pet this creature immediately.
That’s all for this week. Go have a cuppa and enjoy your weekend!
