Hello friends, and Happy New Year! Although my brain seems to think it’s 2020 (fully frozen in time), it is actually 2023! We had a pretty mellow New Year’s — just hung out, watched the ball drop in Times Square three full hours before our midnight, and then binged the rest of Bad Sisters. I went to bed at 12:03 AM.
And Speaking of Bad Sisters — you gotta watch it. It’s on AppleTV+, which I know not many folks have, but like…ya gotta get it. If not for Ted Lasso or Foundation, then at least for Bad Sisters. I don’t want to talk about it too much because I think it might give away some of the amazing twists and turns throughout, but I will say this: the writing on this show is soooooo fantastic. A perfect amount of foreshadowing so that you can figure out the whodunnit before they tell you well, who done it, and just the right amount of dark humor (should I spell that humour since they’re Irish?). Big thumbs up from yours truly.
I’ve been back to work this week, but thankfully not too busy — especially since I didn’t go in to the office for the last half of the week because we’re having some wild weather out here in the Bay Area. An “Atmospheric River”/“Pineapple Express”/“Bomb Cyclone” (where do they come up with these names? also please note the phrasing “underwent bombogenesis” — fantastic) that is basically just a massive storm bringing tons of rain and wind.
Luckily we haven’t been too affected where we live, I think because we’re on the back side of the mountains, but the flooding and highway closures is enough to make me stay home. Like, yes, we have a ton of amenities at work, but I am not interested in staying there for any extended period of time, thank you. It’s supposed to continue off and on for the next week or so, I think, so we’ll see how we fare. For now, I’m not too worried.
Anyway, onto the week at hand:
The Resolute Desk
Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? In recent years I’ve started trying to keep mine light and manageable, because I used to end up with a massively overwhelming list that I could never actually reach no matter how hard I tried. So, now it’s things like “move more,” and “walk rather than drive,” instead of “work out for 30 minutes every day”.
Relevant to this newsletter, though, I have a few things I’d like to do! Hopefully this year you’ll see a new logo and a little nicer theming throughout. Also, you’re going to start seeing more screenshots of tweets and/or embedded videos. As I’ve gone back through some of the old newsletters, I’ve noticed that some of the tweets I’ve linked are now from suspended accounts (I blame you-know-who), meaning the original content is now gone. So I’d like to try to maintain the integrity of the newsletters going forward (less things to click through to, too!).
Still no plans to make any paid tiers though. This trash will remain free of charge!
Wait, Pinterest?
I just saw a blurb this morning mentioning that PINTEREST of all places has been successful lately predicting the year’s trends? I didn’t realize Pinterest was still like…cool. I mean, I’m still using it, but I don’t look to myself as a marker of what’s hip anymore. Here’s what they’ve got on the docket for 2023. I’ll be interested to come back here later in the year and see how accurate this was.
Going Up

What. Is. This? I didn’t even know something like this existed. I LOVE cool elevators. I’ve been in Chicago’s Fine Arts building’s manual elevator many times, and the awe never wore off. I can see why both are less prevalent now — the manual elevator actually requires an attendant, obviously, and I would probably hurt myself trying to get into this never-ending one, but I’m glad they’re still around.
Wholesome Fun
Firstly, please enjoy this TikTok that made me laugh out loud for like 10 minutes this week:
